HAX, backed by the global venture capital firm SOSV, is the world’s leading pre-seed accelerator dedicated exclusively to "hard tech" startups. Unlike traditional software incubators, HAX supports founders tackling complex physical and industrial-scale challenges—ranging from decarbonization and climate tech to industrial automation and advanced healthcare robotics.
To support these intensive developmental needs, HAX established its U.S. headquarters in Newark, New Jersey. This facility functions as a collaborative residency, providing startups with financial capital alongside direct access to elite engineering support, supply chain expertise, and heavily specialized prototyping infrastructure. It is designed to be an innovation ecosystem where founders can rapidly prototype, test, and de-risk their hardware on the path to commercialization.
BENCHMARKS
Located at 707 Broad Street in Newark, the primary architectural challenge was transforming 35,000 square feet of commercial space into a highly robust, multi-disciplinary manufacturing and research hub. Our goal was to bridge Newark’s rich industrial heritage with a modern, community-driven startup environment.
Because hard tech development requires both deep focus and messy, loud experimentation, the design required meticulous spatial programming. We successfully co-located heavy industrial fabrication, highly sensitive chemical research, and open-plan office work within a single, cohesive floor plan, ensuring that the facility felt unified rather than partitioned.
To realize HAX’s operational requirements, our design team engineered and delivered several complex functional zones tailored to accommodate up to 200 founders and engineering staff:
