Visiting Nurse Association
Somerset County, NJ
NJBIA Award
Involved Subsidiaries:
The Kimmerle Group's development of a new headquarters site for the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) began with the examination and study of an existing structure on site for adaptation and expansion. The site, a former field service facility for JCP&L, was acquired based on the premise that the structure might be reused and expanded for the proposed use.
After careful programming of the new requirement and the development of a least three complete architectural concepts and construction budgets for the adaptation of that structure, the client elected to pursue a new building composed of two principal structures. The second structure is intended to accommodate the ultimate expansion of the VNA and its Senior Day Care Program, currently housed off-site in a nearby location.
Ultimately, the VNA will occupy a 25,000 sf multilevel structure while the Somerset County Nutrition Center will occupy an 11,000 sf single story structure on site. The buildings as proposed consist of two steel-frame, metal-roofed, brick-veneered, shed-shaped structures built around an open-air, landscaped courtyard, with paths leading to gardens and trails for the clients of the senior center.
The predominantly single-story structures also accommodate mezzanine work and storage areas accessible for volunteer programs, an important component of this community-based organization whose presence will be integrated and highlighted in the front lobby areas of VNA's main building.

The Kimmerle Group was careful to integrate the best in architecture, planning and technology for this new complex, while maintaining sensitivity to the non-profit nature of this organization.
When planning interior finishes and other architectural features for non-profit clients, we believe that the final product must reflect the community-based nature of these organizations.
